ADA Consulting
Becoming an ADA Compliant Facility
Compliance is the same for everyone, but each facility has unique circumstances. Here are our recommended top ten items you should consider:
-
Path of travel from the public right of way to your door. This includes: ramps, striping, tactile warning services for the blind and more.
- Parking. Did you know that every business should have van accessible parking spaces?
-
Entrance Doors. These must be a specific size, use proper handles and include accessible thresholds.
- Countertops. Workstations need to be at proper heights, have specific knee-clearance and turning space.
- Travel routes through the facility. This includes clearance between display areas, poles and permanent fixtures.
- Restroom Facilities. All restrooms must be accessible including the heights of fixtures, dispensers and door swings.
- Office Support Equipment. This includes facility light fixtures, switches, plugs fire extinguisher and other items pertaining to store operation.
- Handicap Signage. Must be posted for parking spaces, accessible entrance doors, restrooms and routes of travel throughout the facility.
- Elevators. If you are a medical office or facility you may be required to provide an elevator.
- Assembly Areas. For example--Movie Theaters, Conference Facilities and Churches may need to provide equipment for the hearing impaired, special seating areas and companion seating.
This is just a sample of ADA compliance issues that may expose your business to a potential lawsuit. If you spot any of these issues, please call us for a more thorough look at your facility.
